Theodore R. Addai, MD Dr. Addai received his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School, Accra, Ghana. He completed his residency and fellowship with Cook County Hospital in Chicago and is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.
“Cardiology is at the heart of medicine,” says Dr. Addai. “It is a field that is rapidly advancing and constantly finding new ways to help people with heart issues.”
Luis J. Caceres, MD Dr. Caceres is native of Peru, where he graduated from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima. He fulfilled his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and his fellowship at Lutheran General Hospital with the University of Chicago in Illinois.
"One of the things I try to focus on in my practice is prevention," says Dr. Caceres. "Many patients do not realize that they are very much in control of their own heart health. Simple lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and exercise, can greatly improve your cardiac health and help prevent future complications.”
Jeanne Marie Kairouz, MD St.Mary’s Hospital and Prairie Heart Institute are pleased to welcome Dr. Jeanne Marie Kairouz. Dr. Kairouz is board certified in Cardiology, Nuclear Cardiology and Internal Medicine. She joins the PHI heart team as a noninvasive cardiologist adding depth to the already nationally recognized interventional heart care provided by Prairie.
"We look forward to Dr. Kairouz bringing her expertise in cardiology and women's health to the Prairie Heart Institute at St. Mary’s Hospital," said Kevin F. Kast, President and CEO of St. Mary's Hospital. "Women experience different warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack that at times do not even consist of chest pain; Dr. Kairouz is adept at identifying early warning signs and treating women to prevent heart damage."
A graduate of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, Dr. Kairouz received her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. She completed her internal medicine residency at New England Medical Center and then her cardiology fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Manohar Kola, MD After graduating from Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, India, Dr. Kola turned to Cook County Hospital in Chicago to complete both his residency and fellowship.
“Although cardiology is a field surrounded by advanced technology, I feel the most important aspect of treatment is truly caring for patients,” Dr. Kola says. “Touching patients’ lives and communicating with them regarding all aspects of their care is the essence of what we do.”
Bernard Lim, MD Dr. Lim received his medical degree from the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom. He began his residency at Dundee Teaching Hospitals and Leeds Teaching Hospitals also in the UK. He went on to complete his residency at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota followed by his fellowship and is board certified in cardiovascular disease.
"At Prairie Heart, we treat the whole person rather than an isolated disease entity," says Dr. Lim. "We recognize the additional time it takes to listen to patients and assess their needs in order to make sure that everything possible is done to provide quality care for patients. The needs of the patient come first."
Gregory Mishkel, MD Dr. Mishkel completed his medical schooling and residency at the University of Toronto, and then went on to complete post-graduate training at McMaster University at the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada.
“Each patient’s unique history, anatomy, personality and family are what brings the practice of medicine alive. My goal is to restore a good quality of life as each patient defines it,” says Dr. Mishkel. “Consequently, I strongly believe that doctors must be good listeners to hear what each patient needs. When every day is done, I want to be able to say, ‘Today I did some good’.”
Kris Patel, MD Dr. Patel earned his medical degree from Topiwala National Medical College, Bombay University in Bombay, India. He performed his residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and went on to complete his fellowship at Mt. Sinai Medical Center affiliated with the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
“Cardiology appeals to me because of its logical discipline blended with the science,” says Dr. Patel. “When it comes to patient care, my mantra is to be the patient’s advocate and provide effective, personalized care.”
Vijay P. Roy, MD Also native to India, Dr. Roy graduated from Rajendra Medical College in Ranchi. He also accomplished both his residency and fellowship at Cook County Hospital and did medical training at St. George’s Hospital in London, England. For Dr. Roy, pursuing a career in cardiology was more than a vocational choice—it was a personal one.
“I witnessed a couple of my family members have a heart attack growing up,” says Dr. Roy. “I used to have dreams about what we could have done to help them. Now, I am able to help others overcome cardiac issues and aid in saving their lives.”
Marc E. Shelton, MD After completing his medical degree and residency at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, Dr. Shelton continued his medical training with a cardiology fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Shelton says, “The most rewarding part of cardiology to me is to see patients' lead happy and productive lives after recovering from a critical illness.”
