Cancer Surgery - back to top of page
The Cancer Care Center at St. Mary’s Hospital combines state-of-the-art treatment technology with compassionate care for your body and soul. At the Cancer Care Center, a multidisciplinary team manages your care. That’s why a physician specially trained in surgery will perform any surgical procedures you might need, while specialists from the Cancer Care Specialists of Central Illinois will manage your chemotherapy and/or radiology therapy.

St. Mary’s is home to a Prairie Cardiovascular clinic, a national leader in the development of new diagnostic and treatment procedures for cardiovascular care. Cardiovascular surgeons from Illinois Heart Specialists and Springfield Clinic Cardiology also perform surgery at St. Mary’s.
Common cardiac procedures performed at St. Mary’s include ablations, angioplasty, catheterization and stents. Because we have teamed up with exceptional surgeons, we can offer you a quality, compassionate and comfortable surgical experience.
Ear, Nose and Throat (Otolaryngology) Surgery - back to top of page
Ear, Nose and Throat specialists are also called otolaryngologists. They provide medical and surgical care for diseases and disorders involving the ear, nose, throat, head and neck. When you choose to have ENT surgery at St. Mary’s, you know you will be cared for by an exceptionally trained surgeon in our compassionate and caring environment.
General Surgery - back to top of page
General surgeons are specially trained to provide surgical care of the whole patient, including injuries and illnesses of the abdomen, breasts, skin, and head and neck. General surgeons are also used for trauma surgery and for most oncology/cancer surgery.
At St. Mary’s, general surgeons perform many procedures using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Appendectomies, hernia repairs, gallbladder removal and narrow band imaging (NBI), which is done for early cancer detection, are all frequently done using minimally invasive techniques.

Gynecologists are also trained in surgical procedures involving the female reproductive organs. Because St. Mary’s is equipped with three state-of-the-art surgical suites containing minimally invasive surgical technology, procedures like hysterectomies, removal of uterine fibroids (myomectomy), endometrial ablations and other gynecological surgeries are often performed at St. Mary’s using minimally invasive techniques.

Neurosurgery, orthopedic and podiatry surgery include operations involving the brain, spine, bones, joints, muscles and feet. A wide range of procedures are performed at the hands of our exceptional surgeons—aneurysm surgeries, tumor removals, joint replacements, back surgeries, bunion removals, neuroma removals, procedures to correct skeletal deformities and more.
St. Mary’s Hospital has exceptional neurosurgeons on staff that specialize in diseases of the brain and spinal cord. Terrence L. Pencek, MD, PhD, performs cutting-edge and revolutionary procedures including cervical disc replacement, minimally invasive lumbar spine disc surgery and the x-stop procedure. Also on staff at St. Mary’s are John Britt, MD, who specializes in spinal and orthopedic surgery, and Jason Anderson, DPM, who specializes in the treatment of conditions of the foot and ankle.

Urology is the field of medicine that involves the urinary tracts of women and the urinary and reproductive systems of men. Urologists perform surgical procedures involving the renal (kidney) system, ureters, bladder, prostate, testicles, urethra and penis. At St. Mary’s, many of these procedures are done using minimally invasive techniques.
St. Mary’s is home to Lake Shore Urology, a team of four Board-Certified urological surgeons dedicated to offering you comprehensive urologic services of the highest quality to meet your needs. These four surgeons offer expertise in specific urinary and reproductive health surgeries for the Decatur area using the latest techniques, diagnostic tests and procedures

St. Mary’s offers exceptional vascular surgical care from Decatur’s only Fellowship-Trained, Board-Certified vascular surgeons. Vascular surgeons are trained in the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting all parts of the vascular system except the heart and brain, which are managed by cardiologists and neurosurgeons.
Common vascular surgical procedures include angioplasty, aneurysm repair, arteriogram, carotid artery stenting, dialysis access procedure, peripheral artery disease treatments and cosmetic vein repair. At St. Mary’s, many of these procedures are done using minimally invasive techniques.
