Postnatal Care

As you return home with your new bundle of joy, St. Mary’s will continue to provide you with postnatal support.

We offer an infant massage class for mom and baby. During the class, a certified massage instructor teaches you special infant massage techniques that foster love, compassion and respect between you and your baby. Infant massage improves your baby’s general well-being, promotes relaxation and helps your baby self-regulate and calm, which reduces crying. Mom and baby come together to the class, providing a special bonding experience. Details are available in our Childbirth Class brochure.

Breastfeeding support is available from our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). The lactation consultants can be reached at 217-464-2334.

St. Mary's Hospital encourages and supports the referral of breastfeeding mothers to our facility following discharge, even if delivered at another facility. St. Mary's also accepts referrals from community clinics, health departments, clinic offices or parent-to-parent. We strive to provide close outpatient follow-up for breastfeeding mothers and their infants.

Newborn follow-up care is recommended within 48 hours of discharge. If this is not feasible, the mother and baby are asked to return to St. Mary's for breastfeeding assessment, weight check and jaundice assessment, as indicated. A telephone helpline to lactation consultants and early post-discharge follow-up calls are provided to our patients. The lactation consultants, pediatric nurse practitioner, physicians, breastfeeding educators and maternal-child nurses work as a team to provide continuous support, education, resources and reassurance to breastfeeding families.
